Last September 17, 2019 Miss Earth Air Ana Monica P. Tan sharing her time and educating us on how essential it is to care for our Mother Earth. We’re always learning more about how our waste impacts our planet. Waste contributes to the pollution of our oceans and lakes, and increase the greenhouse gas effect that causes global warming. You may have heard about the 3R’s, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. But the world is always changing. The three R’s aren’t cutting it, so now we have the five R’s; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, and Re-purpose.
Not all waste can degrade and a great majority of it decomposes to produce toxic gases that can lead to pollution and increase in greenhouse gases. Plastics are one type of waste that can find their way into our oceans and remain there until they break down into smaller and smaller pieces. These pieces are they consumed by sea creatures, which can have damaging effects to their bodies.
The 5R’s start by reduce to save resources. Substitute disposables for reusable options, and instead of chucking everything, see if you can refuse it! If you still have rubbish leftover, separate what little trash you have left and make sure to recycle. Compost what’s left and let it repurpose. Admittedly, this is only a brief list of possible impacts but that does not mean that the problems stop where the sentence ends. Some of the environmental and economic effects of waste and poor waste disposal. The similar effects on the environment and the accumulation of waste in the ocean.
These saddening trends in waste disposal, we can find positive ways to be involved in the cycle of production, consumption, and waste. The 5 R’s can help us distinguish what is truly wasteful and what is not.
